Custom sauna construction loose ends and random concerns.
Here are some odds and ends to think about before finalizing your custom sauna construction plans.
FLOORS--SO WHAT IS A DUCKBOARD ANYWAY?
- No custom sauna is complete without it’s duckboard. Duckboards are elevated platforms that keep your feet off the floor. They are constructed much like benches but are removable
and just tall enough (1”-2”) to keep you above a cold, wet floor.
- The floor should have a drain or at least slope so the water all goes in one direction.
THE ROOF
- You can loose a lot of heat through the roof. Insulate it well.
- Sauna ceilings are low (usually about 7’) so heat is not wasted.
THE WALLS
The walls can be constructed in many ways but they should all have a couple of similarities.
- There needs to be plenty of insulation. Not only does it keep the heat in but also keeps the temperature from fluctuating.
- There should be some form of vapor barrier. If the wall material is not a natural vapor barrier you need to add some type of vapor barrier. Visquine is easy but some people are
concerned about vapors given off from the plastic. A standard material to use is aluminum foil. This is stapled to the walls in overlapping horizontal layers starting at the bottom.
Custom sauna construction starts with a lot of pre-planning. Saunas are not static spaces. They function, and the better your plan the better your sauna will function. The more you work out ahead of time the less time you spend undoing mistakes.
